The Tent Lott
affair has come to an end, as the Senate majority leader elects
to step down from his prestigious and powerful post. Lott has been
badly wounded by his reported remarks at a political going away
party for the erasable centenarian and former arch conservative
Strom Thurmond of South Carolina. Thurmond having just passed his
one hundredth birthday was being toasted by many of his senate colleagues
when Lott hoisted a glass of bubbily and opinned that if the old
man had been elected back in 1948 quote we would not have
all of these problems over all years either unquote.
wistful remembrance of the good OLE days of Dixie quiet and complacent
darkies and the joys of separate water fountains did not sit well
with some folks. Politicians of all stripes couldnt dissociate
themselves from his remarks fast enough. The White House erected
a public wall of ice, several prominent republicans announced that
they wished Lott would simply resign his post. And the democrats
had a field day, that they have not had since the 11th of September
When the Mississippian
found that few, if any, of his colleagues would even bother to return
his phone calls, it must have dawned on the man that his days in
the driving seat were indeed numbered. It was indeed only a matter
of time before the senator would yield.
What the Lott
affair teaches us is that politicians are rare ducks indeed. This
goes for whether they call themselves either liberals or conservatives.
One day they are out on the Senate floor or infront of the camera
braying about this distinguished gentleman here or my good friend
the senator from the fine old state of whatever in truth
however aint no love lost among them. They are creatures of
endless and relentless ambition, and todays friend is easily
row, this is Mumia Abu-Jamal.
