Day of the Long Knives

mp3, 1.8 MBs, 2:16

[Col. Recorded 12/22/02]

In the play Julius Caesar, Shakespeare gives Brutus these lines to Cassias:

“There is a tide in the affairs of men, which taken at the flood leads onto fortune, omitted all the voyage of their of life is bound in shallows and in miseries.”

The Tent Lott affair has come to an end, as the Senate majority leader elects to step down from his prestigious and powerful post. Lott has been badly wounded by his reported remarks at a political going away party for the erasable centenarian and former arch conservative Strom Thurmond of South Carolina. Thurmond having just passed his one hundredth birthday was being toasted by many of his senate colleagues when Lott hoisted a glass of bubbily and opinned that if the old man had been elected back in 1948 quote “we would not have all of these problems over all years either” unquote.

Lotts almost wistful remembrance of the good OLE days of Dixie quiet and complacent darkies and the joys of separate water fountains did not sit well with some folks. Politicians of all stripes couldn’t dissociate themselves from his remarks fast enough. The White House erected a public wall of ice, several prominent republicans announced that they wished Lott would simply resign his post. And the democrats had a field day, that they have not had since the 11th of September 2001.

When the Mississippian found that few, if any, of his colleagues would even bother to return his phone calls, it must have dawned on the man that his days in the driving seat were indeed numbered. It was indeed only a matter of time before the senator would yield.

What the Lott affair teaches us is that politicians are rare ducks indeed. This goes for whether they call themselves either liberals or conservatives. One day they are out on the Senate floor or infront of the camera braying about this distinguished gentleman here or my good friend the senator from the fine old state of whatever — in truth however aint’ no love lost among them. They are creatures of endless and relentless ambition, and today’s friend is easily tomorrow fiend.
