Friends welcome. On A Move Long Live John Africa! Thank you all for coming.

We are living as that old Chinese adage used to say “in interesting times”. We live in an age of the imminent threat of war, recession, and political repression. With the reemergence of the right it almost looks like the latest rendition of ‘back to the future’. Not since the 1940’s or 50’s have we seen such a lust for the death penalty, that fact that people who are under 18 are being sent to the gallows is a reflection of how far we haven’t come. Habeas Corpus is but a shadow of its former self, thanks to that born again republicrat Bill Clinton. And the prison industrial complex grows more by more everyday. In such a time it is not effective to lay down, to surrender the struggle to give up. In such a time it is vitally necessary to reach out to touch others, to build, to find others who share our vision.

If a mirror is shattered the reflection would be fragmented, the mirror that is the media does not reflect that which exists, but rather reflects only that which the owners wants it to reflect. It views nearly a quarter of a million men, women, students, and children at a mass demonstration and reflects oh several thousand. It echoes and amplifies only the voices and opinions of those who own sufficient wealth to buy access. If is for that very reason that you can’t know the world by the poor after images that you see in the media, it is not the real world. It is not a true reflection. Think not of the eye of a camera but of the living eyes of your friends, your neighbors, your comrades. They are the people who will bring life to the movements for social justice; they are the very breath of the movement, touch them and we can move mountains. Take heart, remember when we organize we make change. Doesn’t the status quo cry out for change? Well then organize. Let’s begin; let’s build together.

Thank you. On the Move, Long Live John Africa, this is Mumia Abu-Jamal.
