3 YEARS OF HYPE -- 3 YEARS OF HELL
================================
[Col. Writ. 3/18/06] Copyright '06 Mumia Abu-Jamal

For three years, the Iraq War has been raging, bearing the bitter fruits of vengeance, violence and torture.

This war, unlike those that went before, was met by large and popular protests of discontent, although it did not stop the ravages of the dogs of war.

But 3 years later, while the marches go on (albeit smaller), discontent has only risen.

Polls show that 60% of Americans feel badly about the Iraq War, and relatively few feel that civil war can be averted.

Most folks feel that the war wasn't worth it.

If that's the way most Americans feel, how do you think average Iraqis are feeling?

We have heard about torture, brutalities, and foul treatment of Iraqis by American occupiers and their hired quislings, but there is another kind of torture; that visited by the inherent violence of occupation.  Writer Kristian Williams, in his new book, *American Methods: Torture and the Logic of Domination* (Cambridge, Ma.: South End Press, forthcoming May 2006) cites reports of the International Red Cross, to show how average Iraqis are treated at the hands of American occupiers, especially upon arrest:

"Arresting authorities entered houses usually after dark, breaking down doors, waking up residents roughly, yelling orders, forcing family members into one room under military guard while searching the rest of the house and further breaking down doors, cabinets, and other property.  They arrested suspects, tying their hands in the back with flexicuffs, hooding them, and taking them away.  Sometimes they arrested all adult males present, including elderly, handicapped, or sick people.  Treatment often included pushing people around, insulting, taking aim with rifles, punching and kicking and striking with rifles.  Individuals are often led away in whatever they happened to be wearing at the time of arrest -- sometimes in pajamas or underwear -- and they were denied the opportunity to gather a few essential belongings, such as clothing, hygiene items, medicine, or eyeglasses.  ...Military intelligence officers told the ICRC that in their estimate *between 70% and 90% of the persons deprived of their liberty in Iraq had been arrested by mistake.*" [Williams, p. 36]

Should any Iraqi be welcoming this?

So poisoned have our minds been by presidential and corporate media spin, that we actually think Iraqis should be grateful for such highhanded imperial treatment!

This mad war, the diseased brainchild of American neocons, has been a disaster since day one, and gets worse every day.

And now these nuts want to lock arms with Iran!

Neocon dreams become real live nightmares.  As scholar-activist theologian Mark L. Taylor notes, the Project for a New American Century all but predicted this war, well over a year before 9-11.  As Taylor writes in his new book, *Religion, Politics, and the Christian Right* (Minneapolis: Fortress Press, 2005):

"The PNAC [Project for a New American Century] enabled the neoconservatives to hone their policy and lobby for it through publications and in open letters disseminated during the Clinton years.  Many neoconservatives assumed positions in the new Bush regime of 2001.  Of eighteen PNAC members who signed a January 1998 open letter to Clinton advocating "removing Saddam Hussein .... needs to become the aim of American foreign policy," eleven of them went on to important positions under Bush (Richard Armitage, Donald Rumsfeld, Elliot Abrams, John Bolton, Paula Dobriansky, Zalmay Khalizad, Richard Perle, Peter W. Rodman, William Schneider, Jr., Robert B. Zoellick, and Paul Wolfowitz, whom Bush appointed in 2005 as World Bank president.) [p. 65]

As the PNAC knew, what was needed was a "new Pearl Harbor" -- and then -- bingo! -- came 9-11.

The rest is disaster, chaos, and the fevered dreams of 'recreating the Mid-East.'

And now, in the face of this human, social, historical, and psychological carnage, the mad hatters in the White House are licking their chops over Iran!  In Bush's opinion, Iraq was a "success" -- or so his speech-writers claim, and now the martial dream marches onward -- to Iran.

This is sheer madness.

This madness must end, or we all will.
