The Lessons From the Osama Hit
[col. writ. 5/8/11] (c) '11 Mumia Abu-Jamal
While many in the political world, the media and the general populations are crowing about the hit on al Qaeda chief Osama bin Laden as proof of the skill and toughness of the military, and a lesson to jihadis around the world, there are other lessons as well. Ones that the nation chooses to forget.
Yes, the U.S. Navy's Seal team showed ruthless efficiency in conducting their mission. They obviously trained to an incredibly high level, and swept aside every obstacle, human or technical, to achieve it: the killing of Osama.
But imagine, if you will, what the world would've been like had a team entered Afghanistan, and accomplished the same result, within weeks, or months -- after 9/11?
Dare to imagine that:
Iraq was never invaded nor occupied, and about a million Iraqis had not been killed: or over 3 million Iraqis wouldn't have been driven into exile.
Afghanistan has never been invaded, its government not replaced with a corrupt
regime known more for its drug trafficking than its competency; and millions of
Afghans wouldn't have been drawn into exile.
Trillions of dollars siphoned into Imperial wars which benefited the defense
industries would've gone to strengthening the national, social, and educational
Thousands of American soldiers would still be alive, husbands, fathers, sons, mothers, daughters and sisters -- alive; and tons of thousands would be whole, in mind and body; There would probably not be a Department of Homeland Security;
And finally; The al Qaeda network wouldn't be entrenched in the regions where they are now, strengthened, as they were, by the profound stupidities of the Iraq war and the resultant occupation.
If 9/11 weren't used as a cheap political pretext for wars, invasions and occupations, both the U.S., and the worlds would be a significantly different place, with less death, less carnage and less disaster.
But the government opted for an imperial response, rather than a national one -- and the nation; and the world -are poorer for it.
